Hack the Bells

Hack the Bells is the world's first remix competition for carillon. This project is an exploration in sound, vision, and performance that asks artists and new media visionaries to use the bells as they see fit - to hack the bells.

The Contest

This project encourages artists, musicians, performers, and other visionaries to use the Campanile and/or the openly licensed Campanile audio and images from our library in their creative work.

Works will be submitted to and reviewed by a jury of international artists, new media innovators, cultural curators, and academics. They will select a winner, who will be awarded a prize of $700 USD and an opportunity to have their work permanently acquired by the University of California, Berkeley, and the Anton Brees Carillon Library for public display and use. Three runner-up prizes will be awarded, totaling $100 USD each.

Submission Details

Submitted works can be:

Visual Arts
Painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, etc.

  5. Bio/artist statement/description of the work
Performance Arts
Dance, interpretive dance, happenings, etc.

  3. Short video of performance (.mp4, .mov, .ogg) OR description and duration of proposed piece

  6. Proposed venue (suggestions welcome) (free spaces included i.e. commons, etc.)
Language Arts
Poetry, fiction, etc.

Audio/Video Art

Games, interactives, digital fabrication, visualizations, apps, website, etc.

  3. .aif, .ogg, .wav, .mp3, .mov, .mp4 (Video submissions: 720p or 1080p)
  4. Description of work (e.g., title, media, size, date)
  5. Biography/Artist Statement
  6. Any submission that is primarily a musical score for carillon must be accompanied by a recording of the score, played on whatever musical instrument you are comfortable using or recorded using the Sather Tower bell samples provided in our Library.

Rules

Works must be submitted by 11:59 PM PST on September 1, 2014 .

  • Works should be completed within one year of September 1, 2014
  • Late submissions will not be accepted.
  • Submissions cannot involve physical harm or damage to the Campanile.
  • All works submitted comply with being released under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 .
  • Performances involving playing the carillon live must utilize a student or staff carillonneur from the University of California, Berkeley.

Criteria

Participants will be notified about the status of their submission November 1, 2014.

Specificity to the campanile (history, community, sound), Originality, & Creativity

We encourage applicants who will consider submission related to :

  • The 2014-15 Centennial of the Campanile
  • Accessibility in the tradition of the campanile providing music for public space
  • Openness in relation to open culture and licensing
